I Have Reflux

I've noticed for a couple weeks now some heartburn in the late afternoons and evening but I was hoping it was a one-off thing.

It's happened often enough now that I don't think it is just episodic. I think I have reflux, and I think my band is causing it. I've only ever had heartburn while I'm pregnant, and I know *for sure* that's not the case now. I have been dreading this, as so many other bandsters have run into reflux about 15-18 months after surgery. My surgery was 19 months ago.

The heartburn isn't terrible, at least not yet, and I'm not waking up coughing at night. But I'm concerned about where this is heading. I took a Zantac half an hour ago and I'm hoping it'll keep the heartburn under control.

We're heading out of town again on Friday. I can't wait to enjoy the mountain air and do some fun hikes with the kids! I have an appointment with my surgeon when I get home, and I'll see what he has to say about all this.

  1. I'm sorry you have reflux. I've had it to some degree since about 5-6 months after surgery. They made me have an upper gi to make sure things were good and I wasn't overfilled. They told me a may just be more prone than others to get it (i did have pre surgery too). I've taken prescription medicine since then and make sure I get checked a lot.
It's definitely not something to take lightly though.

  2. Sorry to hear this.
Have you looked at what you're eating and at what time?
Have you tried adding milk or yogurt to your diet to calm your 'gullet?' I"ve noticed a slight bit of heartburn (I guess?) lately... I've taken over the counter medication a couple of times and am doing what I said above-- I am pretty sure that milk products are soothing.
I didn't think about it being related to the timing after the band.
    Hmmm again.
I guess if I find it with any regularity that I will get it checked-- but I not very bothered by it happening ON OCCASION (despite the fact that I am certain it is my band that is causing it.)
Good luck and please share what you find out, band sista.

  3. I'm sorry that you're wrestling with heart burn. I'm glad you have an appointment with your surgeon to get it checked out. Seems a lot of bandsters are having issues right around this time frame. Enjoy the mountains and stay as comfortable as possible!

  4. I always look to you to see what's going on because we were banded within days of each other. So far, the band totally STOPPED my reflux, and I was so grateful! Now I'm waiting for it to start every time I have a fill. I have zantac on hand just in case. The only time I have it a little bit is if I eat something really fatty, like a doughnut or icing. Duh. lol!

Have fun on your trip. I'm missing you lately!

  5. I am so sorry you have reflux...I never really had reflux before hand and I am really hoping that I don't ever have that issue! But I am very aware that it is possible!

Have so much fun on your trip! Hope you get to relax a bit!

  6. I know this may sound stupid, but what exactly is reflux like? I've looked it up on Google, since I've heard people talk about it, but I've never had it happen to me. I hope you find out what is causing it and that you feel better soon. Just relax and don't think the worst. I'm sure you will be fine!! :)

  7. Me too, lady. Never even had heart burn before the band. Get on a prescription, I just did and it's 95% gone. Do it now. (sorry, my doc freaked me out with esophagus cancer talk)

  8. Hey Chica, I have been MIA but trying to read a few blogs. Hope you are having an awesome summer.

Reflux. I seem to have it in a permanent way now, never had it before, not even during pregnancy!. Only at night now, but it is there pretty much every night.

I have been taking Zantac or Prilosec or whatever every night. It sucks, but the meds totally cure the symptoms. I am definitely NOT too tight, that is not the problem. So I'm just crossing my fingers, hoping its okay. Mine started a few months ago, so yes, about 18 months out.

Really hope this is not a big deal for either of us! Happy Summer.
