Freaking Out a Little About the Reflux Chatter

So I'm reading about Amy and Gen having serious relux problems, and other people are weighing in with their problems. And Sally had her band removed.

This is freaking me out.

I've had heartburn, but almost exclusively during pregnancy. It resolved itself once my babies were born, except for right before my band surgery. Turned out I had a little hernia that my doctor stitched while he was placing my band and I haven't had heartburn since surgery.

If you're reading this and you've had problems with reflux since surgery, can you please mention in the comments: date of your surgery; approximate date of reflux onset; doctor's recommendation for treatment; and whether it has resolved.

Thanks for your input. It's not scientific, but I'd like to see if there are any obvious trends.

  1. I have had no issues with reflux/heart burn at all. It really is scary, I was reading Sally's warning to bansters today. Scientific or not, it will be interesting to see responses.

  2. Who is Sally???? What is her blog? I would like to read it! If you don't mind! I have actually had trouble with reflux since surgery, it only occured a couple of times. I was banded in Aug and it happened prob in like Sept - Oct. I should also tell you I had severe acid reflux before I had surgery so I didn't think anything about it! When I told my Dr - He said you should never have acid reflux once you have been banded, unless there is a problem. It shocked me because I had never heard that before. I haven't had any issues since, but I have also lost 50 lbs. They always told me my weight was what caused it in the first place. I know this doesn't really give you any answers, but thought I would share my experience with it!!!! Let me know about that blog if you don't mind!!! :)

  4. I agree that it isi freaking me out too, to the degree that I feel like I have reflux over it too. I did eat something spicy, so that may be it. I hope it goes away. I haven't taken anything yet.

I was banded on 10/1, and had a fill this week, and an unfill :) and now i am at 5.9 in a 10 cc band, and have just hit the 49 lb mark.

I trust you are going to put your journalistic expertise to the test? Yay! Keep us posted!

  5. Freaking me out too. I just got a fill last week and think I irritated my stomach so I'm taking it super easy. I too had reflux when I was pregnant and at my heaviest. I haven't had the same feeling with the band. However, I have had sort of a semi-burning feeling in my stomach when I eat spicy food, drink OJ. I'm not sure if it's the food or it it's something I shouldn't be doing?????

  7. I have only had a few reflux problems but I am worried about it becoming serious.

  8. Well I have had a reflux problem since about my 3rd fill (maybe 5-6 cc's, no where near restriction). I was really scared, but we did all sorts of tests (2 upper Gi's) and they were satisfied that I was not overfilled or slipped. I have taken nexium since and it keeps everything in check. It's weird, I only get it in the morning before I eat (if I don't take my meds).
It is serious and if I got a fill and had nightime reflux I would call my Dr. right away.

  9. I have had reflux probs since July, three unfills. I took prilosec OTC for 14 days , then off 2 wkd & now they have me on it again PLUS Zantac @ night. I'm starting to get small unfills each month until either it goes away or I will be completely unfilled, at which time I will have it removed. I have very little facts that support the band as permanent. I am taking whatever amount of time I get to make permanent lifestyle changes so that IF/When it should happen to me, I will be able to maintain,

  10. I haven't had any acid reflux and maybe 3 episodes of the slightest sense of heartburn since the surgery. Nothing ongoing, nothing bothersome, and to the point of me not even being sure if it was heartburn-- but probably was b/c it was a warm feeling of discomfort in my chest that lasted a few seconds and then went away.
I am off to read Sally's blog that seemed to scare everyone-- but remember: you're you and she is Sally and everyone's experience is different, K?

  11. Hmmmm.... I never had heart burn or reflux until after my surgery. Once I got to good restriction...maybe 3 months post op I started getting reflux. I take Prilosec OTC pretty often and my doc isn't worried in the least. Should I be worried?

  12. Joey, if your doc isn't worried then you shouldn't worry either. I'm going to ask my surgeon about it at my appointment this week. I'll report back.

  13. Kristin, thanks for the shoutout...I don't think you should worry. This reflux is absolutely the result of being overfilled. The only time I have ever had reflux in my LIFE was the 2 times I was overfilled - in Sept. and now. And that's how I know this fill is all wrong. Otherwise, no issues for me. I think the same is true for Amy. As for Sally, seems like she has other health issues and its not clear how the band fits into the picture, but I feel so bad for her. Dee (Kajun Gumbo) too. That sucks.

Thanks for your supportive comments. Today was better, I got down some soup. But can't wait to get this fixed, it sucks!

  14. Oh I also wanted to ask if you ever read Lise the Loser's blog? She was an early band blogger and she had phenomenal weight loss with the band - down to a size 6 or something. Then she got too tight one weekend, continued to push it with eating while too tight, and dilated her pouch. She had to have the band taken out and replaced. Also, another one of our fellow bloggers from Nebraska had the same thing happen. Too tight, slipped band, had to replace it. I remember that story at times like now...Being too tight can totally f*ck up your band, so I worry about that. Here is Lise's blog: http://lisetheloser.com/
