I Did It! I Exercised!

The thunderstorms everyone was calling for never materialized, so I managed to squeeze in 30 minutes of laps in the pool this afternoon. I am so out of shape that I could only do breast stroke, with the occasional freestyle added in. Lame much? Anyway, I did it. Go me.

Thanks for the party suggestions. The board members are bringing wine, so we should have at least 10 bottles and I'll have five or six on hand to keep things moving along. So nerve-wracking, this party throwing thing. I've never once hosted a cocktail party. Ridiculous, right? We have a party once a year, and it's catered by Planet Pizza. That's the level of entertaining we usually do.

Gilly posted a completely awesome recipe for a quinoa summer salad. I made it yesterday and it's delicious. You can throw anything in this salad and it's great. I used fresh mozzarella and added some chopped cucumber and red onion. So good. Try it.

It's been a crazy day. I'm still reeling from Tipper and Al's breakup, and now we've lost another Golden Girl. Jeesh.

  1. You worked out! Yay you!!!!

Hmmm...sounds suspiciously like you have a pool in your yard. If that is the case and you don't have to drag your butt to the gross crazy-people infested public pool, then you better be doing laps every day, or I'm coming over there and pelting you with quinoa salad!

  2. Good job for getting in the pool! That is a GREAT start too. I live in a townhouse and we have a pool here. But.....they got a late start on opening it because they were still doing touch-up painting yesterday. I did see that the ladders are now IN the pool, so hopefully it will be open soon. I can't wait. My 13 yo and I go there just about every day after work.

We had storms here too. Where are you at? I'm in the midwest--Nebraska.

Thanks for the comment on my blog today. I feel like I am starting over!

  8. Good for you!! That is great! The first step is always a toughie!

On the cocktail party front, don't even stress. I missed your first post, so I'm coming late with my advice. . here goes:

I usually put all the wine glasses I'm going to use out on the counter, along with two corkscrews and a big pitcher with ice water and sliced lemon (put in 1/2 the ice, throw in 5-10 circular slices, put in the rest of the ice & then add water. .looks gorgeous). I put out an ice bucket for one white and uncork 2-4 bottles (including the white in the ice bucket) before anyone gets there so I'm not scrambling when they arrive.

I also like to put brie and a semi-soft cheese (maybe Gouda with the red wax or a goat cheese) on a slab of slate with a pretty bunch of grapes. Looks so pretty. You can put out bowls of olives (with a tinier bowl nearby for pits), marinated mushrooms (put toothpicks nearby), and/or nuts. People will graze and be happy. I try not to serve anything I have to heat up b/c that just creates unnecessary stress, and I don't like being stuck working when guests are there.

Put fresh flowers around, put a good mix on the stereo and you're golden. Oh, and make sure there is extra TP in an obvious spot in the bathroom your guests will use. (I usually keep tampons under the sink in the guest bathroom too, just in case anyone is desperado.)

Two more key things. . Make sure you offer everyone a drink when they come in -- is a sure way to get things festive. And, don't drink more than 1/2 a glass of wine before the guests get there!

    I hope that's helpful!! Have a great time! :)

  9. Great job on the laps.
As for your party...you're so darn charming that there's no possible way this shindig isn't the event of the season.
