I can't even believe I was talkin' trash about my poor scale. It went back and forth, back and forth the other day and then today consistently put me down another two pounds.
I LOVE THAT THING!
I did go to Bed, Bath & Beyond to pick up another, supplemental, scale that has more precise measurements. I'm totally sure this won't end up being some kind of unhealthy obsession, hmmmm.
The eating (drinking) is going well, I'm still working my way through an indulgent nonfat orange mango banana Starbucks Vivanno (260 cal, 15g protein, although I ask for extra protein powder) that I picked up a couple of hours ago.
So here's the thing: I'm 11 days post surgery and I feel good, just about back to normal but maybe a little more tired. I do not, however, have **any** desire to exercise at all right now. I have a pretty good exercise history. In my 20s, I walked and then trotted and then started full-out jogging. I ran a marathon, joined the New York Road Runners club and did a bunch of races with them. I have almost always maintained (and used) a gym membership. In 2004, I trained for and finished three triathlons.
I am still so tired, though. The thought of starting to exercise at this high weight (243 today) just makes me want to go to bed.
Question of the day: When did you start exercising?
UPDATE: Had to ditch the new scale. It turned on once, gave me a helluva scare (+3 pounds!) and then refused to turn back on. That's what I get for trying to do the two-scale thing. Lesson learned.
I started exercise by the end of week 1 - walking and using a recumbent bike. My post op instructions said to start working up to 30 mins 4x week. By the beginning of week three and my followup appointment I was averaging 20 mins with a couple 30s. However, I was exhausted. At my post op appointment they told me I was doing too much. She put me on restrictions of no more than 10 mins of exercise at a time. I was released to do full workouts (but no weight lifting) at 8 weeks (but I think she just forgot to release me at 6).
ReplyDeleteHonestly it took me a few weeks to get back into exercise. I was exhausted for a while and then the holidays started coming at me. So I just slowly started moving again and now I'm into it again. Just take your time, walk for 30 minutes a day, that's all you need to do to start.
ReplyDeleteI was never faithful to exercise pre or post band. I am 5 1/2 months post op and am just starting to develop a routine. Walking mostly (with a jog here and there) I do stay much more active during the day and that started about a month after surgery. I just had more energy and could move more freely. I have taken on projects that I would have in the past paid my sons to do. Like cleaning the horses stall, loading the wood box...stuff like that.
ReplyDeleteI hope when the weather gets better to start something more. Think I will get a bike!
I had a walking program that my surgeon assigned for 6 weeks postop doing starting out with 2 15 min a day walking up to about 45-60 minutes a day. Weights or abdominal workouts could not be done until 10 weeks
ReplyDeleteI probably didn't start working out (walking) until about 3 weeks post op. I was really tired after work everyday and just couldn't get into it. My dr. was pretty set on me not doing anything heavy (besides cardio) for the 1st 6 weeks. Once that 6 weeks hit though, I was in the gym a lot!!
ReplyDeleteAwesome! Already 23 pounds gone!
ReplyDeleteI started exercising on day 10. I did a walk with a few jogs thrown in. It was not great, but it got me going. When I saw my doc at 4 weeks post op he said, with respect to exercise, "as far as I'm concerned, you can do whatever you want. You are totally healed." Which was a let down b/c I wanted to get out of situps for a while...;)
You can take another week or so or just try walking. It is good to move!
We have a lot in common... I did alot of exercising back in the day too!
ReplyDeleteI think you should listen to your body and go slow, walking is always good if you take it nice and easy.
If you are an exercise lover at heart, I think you'll pick up when you're ready.
Your body is probably not ready to expend that much energy - especially since your calories are lower than ever before. You'll know when the time is right - meanwhile continue on as usual. You are doing just fantastic!!!
ReplyDeleteI think I started excercising probably at week 3 or 4 on the eliptical. I waited till week 6 to do a step class or any abs excercise. I totally get the feeling tired thing because for the first 2 weeks all I wanted to do was sleep !!...wait a minute that's still all I want to do now LMAO !!!
ReplyDeleteJust take it slow and you'll get your groove back soon enough !!
I started walking immediately! Well, I should say that my DH made me walk immediately!! However, my Doctor said that I was not to do anything too strenuous for at least 6 wks.
ReplyDeleteDid I listen? NO!! I overdid it putting up Christmas Decorations & was terrified that I had flipped my port. So, like everyone else said. Just take it easy at first.
I started to exercise a week and a half ago (and going strong, thank you very much!).
ReplyDeleteAnd I've had my band for.. oh, it will be 2 years in April.
ahahah.
I suck, clearly.
